Apple may have skipped a couple of flashy extras on the 11 models, but it surely is the best midtier model the company has ever made. The 11 and 11 Pro are around 85% similar, with the Pro being different as a result of its larger storage capacity options, better finish, and screen, as well as its telephoto camera with 2X optical zoom. The iPhone 11 price starts at $699 or around 282,990 Naira in Nigeria for the 64GB model, all the way up to $849 for the 256GB model.

Hardware

Discover the impressive hardware properties of the iPhone 11.

Design

In terms of design, this phone does not bring many surprises, as it is quite similar to the 2018 iPhones. It is made of ion-strengthened glass on the front and back. Its frame is made of brushed aluminium instead of the stainless steel that is featured on the more premium 11 Pro models.

It comes in a set of new colours, namely Product Red, Purple, Black, Yellow, White, and Green. Unlike the Pro versions that have a frosted finish, this phone has a glossy back, which makes it more susceptible to smudging. It is also not as scratch resistant as the other finishes.

The size is pretty much comfortable in the hand, considering that it is larger than the 11 Pro. Interesting to note is that the dimensions and weight are the same as its predecessor, the XR.

Display

The screen of this handset is the same as the XR’s. It is a 6.1-inch IPS LCD with a sizable notch cut-out and a pixel density of 326 PPI. The bezels on this phone are thicker than on the more advanced models with OLED screens. These bezels do stand out at first, but you will get used to it.

Its screen is excellent with accurate colours and good contrast. The True Tone feature automatically adjusts white balance based on ambient light. Although the panel is not as sharp as in the Pro models, it is difficult for one to tell the difference using the naked eye.

On the left side of the device, you will find a standard ring/silent switch and the volume keys. On the right side, there is a power button and a SIM tray. This model supports dual SIM, Nano-SIM and e-SIM. It is important to note that the iPhone 11 is not compatible with existing micro-SIM cards.

It is packed with a lightning charging port and loudspeaker at the bottom, and dual cameras at the back, alongside the iPhone logo, which is positioned almost at the middle part of the back. The bezels on the 11 are similar to those in the XR.

The iPhone 11 does not offer Dolby Vision or HDR support, which are available on the higher tier models. Maximum brightness is good, and users should not experience any problem using it outdoors.

Processor, storage, and performance

Inside this device is the new A13 Bionic chipset, and along with that is 4GB of RAM as the iPhone 11 memory capacity. This chipset is more efficient than the one used in its predecessors. The ROM for this handset comes in three capacities, 64 GB, 128GB, and 256GB.

The performance of this handset is the same as on the Pro versions. It is incomparable to anything in the Android world. It provides 20% better CPU performance over 2018’s chipset. It also does a great job of staying cool, thanks to heat dispersing graphene layers. Therefore, the performance for something like heavy gaming is great as it does not experience thermal throttling.

iPhone 7 Plus review: A reliable handset with amazing features

It is important to keep in mind that the storage is not expandable. Therefore, if you choose to buy the 64GB option, you might run out of space quite fast if you are fond of taking pictures, videos, screenshots, and downloading games.

iPhone 11 battery capacity

It has a 3100mAh battery, just slightly bigger than the XR’s. Its battery life is even much better than the Pro’s, probably as a result of the different power drawn from the screens. This phone comes with a 5W charger, which charges from 0% to 18% in 30 minutes. Luckily, you can purchase an 18W iPhone charger, which will get you up to 55% within the same duration.

There is support for Qi wireless charging in case you do not want to use a wired charger. Apple does not make charging pads, so you will have to use a third-party one.

iPhone XR review: A reliable smartphone with amazing features

This handset comes with a pair of stereo loudspeakers. They are not as balanced as those on the Pro models, which produce more bass from the top speaker. However, they still have a rich sound with very good measured loudness and support for spatial audio. Call quality is also top-notch.

Software

The iPhone 11 features a number of incredible software properties.

Operating system & features

It runs on the iOS 13.1, bringing a few new features such as a system-wide dark mode that can turn all of your white menus into black. Unfortunately, since it has an LCD screen, you do not save power like it would have been possible with an OLED.

Another change in the OS is that it no longer offers 3D touch, which activated context-sensitive actions based on the pressure of your finger on the screen. Now, it features haptic touch, which triggers things with a long press.

iPhone 11 Pro details: Price, features and what people have been saying about the phone

Unlocking the phone is secure with Face ID as it uses 3D facial mapping. It is quite fast as well, but still requires users to swipe on the screen after facial recognition is complete. The water resistance has been bumped up from IP67 to IP68. This means that it can survive under 2 meters of water for 30 minutes. The Pro models can go twice as deep.

iPhone 11 camera, video, and image quality

Unlike the XR’s single camera, this one features an additional 12 MP ultrawide shooter on top of the 12 MP primary camera. The 11 misses the third telephoto camera that comes with the Pro versions. During the day, photos taken from the primary camera have excellent dynamic range, impressively low noise, and rich detail.

The colours captured on the main camera are accurate. However, they seem to be a bit blunt and slightly washed out. The contrast is a bit low, and over-sharpening can be noted in some photos.

Interesting facts about the iPhone 8

The phone has an interesting feature called Capture Outside the Frame. When you take a photo using the main camera, another shot is captured by the ultra-wide camera as well. If it recognizes that you accidentally cropped a person out of the frame, it will suggest a wider angle that fits them in. This feature also works for videos.

The ultrawide camera is pretty average as it has no OIS or autofocus. Photos taken with this camera are decent, with contrast, colours, and dynamic range matching the primary camera. However, there is some slightly visible noise, and the details are slightly less.

Portrait mode uses the main camera, and you get nice detail and colours in good lighting. Unlike in the Pro, it does not use a second camera for depth mapping. Therefore, the subject separation is not quite as good with some small defects.

When the light gets low, it automatically switches to night mode and will take a pseudo long exposure shot. The quality of images taken in low light is superb with plenty of detail, balance sharpening, excellent colours in contrast, and balance exposure. If you choose to turn off the night mode, you will still take decent shots but with darker exposure.

There is no night mode on the ultrawide camera, and if you try to shoot with it in low light, the results are pretty bad.

The 12 MP selfie camera, with a wider 23mm lens, is an upgrade from the XR’s 7 MP. Depending on the orientation of the phone, the selfie camera will switch between the broader field of view or a cropped one. Selfies use Smart HDR, and their quality is top-notch. There is more than enough detail, colour accuracy, great dynamic range, and balanced sharpening.

The selfie camera can now take videos to up to 4K at 60 fps and is stabilized. You can also take slofies, slo-mo selfie videos, in 1080p at 120 or 240 fps. Videos from the rear cameras can also be taken in up to 4K at 60 fps. They can use smart HDR and have wide stereo sound recording too.

4K videos from the main camera look very good with low noise, spot-on sharpness, impressive dynamic range, true-to-life colours, and plenty of detail. 4K videos from the ultra-wide camera are average in quality as they lack detail with soft corners. However, there is still good colour contrast and dynamic range.

Verdict

Although it is a budget option of the 2019 iPhone models, it still has some top-notch features. Some of them include a water-resistant design, plenty of colour options, a bright LCD screen, nice stereo speakers, world-class performance, great photo quality, and excellent battery life. Compared to the Pro versions, you do not get the OLED screen or the telephoto camera. The glass at the back is not frosted, and it fails to come with a proper charger in the box.

At $699 for the 64GB option, it is still far from being a budget phone, but definitely more affordable than the Pro models that start at $999. This device requires a recommendation as it brings pretty much the same experience as the Pro versions at a much more competitive price.

The iPhone 11 is the best of both worlds as it allows users to have a premium experience at a lesser price. If you do not need the additional telephoto camera, which is the main difference from the Pro models, this is definitely the phone for you.
