Nigeria's president, Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, December 3, urged all troops of the Nigerian Army to continue to respect the rule of law and fundamental human rights of all citizens across the country.
Channels Television reports that the president, while at the annual Chief of Army Staff Conference in Kaduna state, urged the soldiers to keep to the rules of engagement and international code of conduct at all times.
President Buhari, a retired army general, also commended the Nigerian Army for its efforts in ensuring that the country is kept safe from all forms of terrorism and attacks.
He said: “I urge our soldiers to continue to abide by their ethics and ethos and keep to the rules of engagement and code of conduct while ensuring that human rights and international humanitarian laws are promoted and respected in the conduct of military operations."
Saluting soldiers gallantry and total patriotism in the discharge of their duties, the president said it is a common knowledge that such feats are associated costs.
“Many personnel have lost their lives, some have sustained injuries and a significant number have been away from their families for a long time,” he said.
“I, once again, send my condolences to the families of those who have paid the supreme sacrifice in an effort to safeguard the sovereignty of our great nation. May their souls rest in perfect peace," the president added.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that President Buhari commended the Nigerian Army on its effort in dealing with insecurity across Nigeria.
The president said his administration and the present Military leadership will do its best to tackle insecurity and protect the lives and properties of citizens of the country.
