Liverpool fans have expressed their annoyance after star defender Virgil Van Dijk was beaten by Lionel Messi who won the 2019 Ballon d'Or award on Monday night, December 2.

Lionel Messi was in incredible form for Barcelona last season finishing as highest goal scorer in Europe and also helped the Catalans to win the Spanish La Liga title.

Virgil Van Dijk was also in great form for Liverpool last season where he helped the Reds to lift the Champions League title beating Tottenham in the final.

The Reds' fans have now branded the choice of naming Lionel Messi as the winner a 'joke' claiming that Virgil Van Dijk had more successful year than the Argentine.

''Virgil van Dijk set the standard for defence in world football. The entirety of Europe was desperately tracking to see if a player could just get past him,'' One wrote.

“Monumental player with unparalleled abilities who won the biggest prize in Europe. For him not to win is an absolute joke,'' another wrote.

“Ballon d’Or is a yearly award right? Not a career achievement award?” questioned another according to Daily Star UK.

“What a joke. There was basically nothing more Van Dijk could have done last year and he knocked Messi out of the UCL after being down 4-0.

“Messi winning the Ballon D’Or is a joke,'' another fan explained according to the report.

Earlier, had reported how Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi was named as the winner of the 2019 Ballon d'Or award beating greatest rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.
