Kogi West people demand hard work from Smart Adeyemi after defeating Melaye

- The people of Kogi West senatorial district asked Senator Adeyemi to be hardworking as he represents them

- Adeyemi also expressed appreciation to the people and other stakeholders in the state for his victory

- The newly elected senator said he was elected because the people want him to represent them

Residents of Kogi West senatorial district have tasked their newly elected senator, Smart Adeyemi, to be hardworking as he prepares to be sworn in as a member of the 9th National Assembly, TVC News reports.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adeyemi, in the keenly contested senatorial election polled 88,373 votes to beat Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 62,133 votes.

Speaking after his victory, Senator Adeyemi promised to prioritise the need of his people at the National Assembly.

Adeyemi who is now a three-term senator said he is humbled by the people’s support.

“There is no doubt that our people have made their decision clear and out that they want me to represent them and I want to thank them for the support,” he said.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state and the people of his district for voting for him.

“I also want to thank the party that gave me the mandate. I want to thank our leader, our dynamic young leader, Governor Yahaya Bello.

“I want to thank the traditional rulers, the opinion leaders, those who moved out to campaign that I am a better candidate,” Adeyemi said.

One of the people of the district who spoke to the TVC News reporter said people will have now prevailed while another claimed the election was rigged.

Meanwhile, Adeyemi's victory has clearly not gone down well with Melaye. The former lawmaker, after the election on Saturday, November 30, said that he would reclaim his mandate because, according to him, he was voted and as such, won the poll.

He alleged that his mandate was stolen from him through violence and what he described as "national conspiracy."
