Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned Serie A Player of the Year in Milan on Monday, December 2, the same night his arch-rival Lionel Messi won his sixth Ballon d'Or award.

The 34-year-old finished third behind Barcelona captain and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk after the ceremony.

Having realized he would not be finishing on the podium in France, the Portuguese star stayed back in Italy to pick up the above-named award.

SunSport, however, reports that the former Real Madrid forward stayed in his car until it was his time to receive the award.

Meanwhile, his decision to have shunned Ballon d'Or appearances sparked so many engagements from football stakeholders at large.

Tancredi Palmeri tweeted: "UNBELIEVABLE! Cristiano Ronaldo waited in his car for the moment in which he had to be awarded MVP Serie A award!

"Then when the time came, he finally get out to enter the theatre, while his bodyguards pointed torchlights to cameras!"

Ronaldo clinched Serie A's best forward and Most Valuable Player awards on the night as he joined journalist Diletta Leotta to receive the gongs.

The Portuguese star joined Juventus last summer and in his first season won the Serie A title for the club. He also finished the MVP for the season.

Ronaldo has already scored 35 goals and 12 assists across competitions for the Old Lady and has a chance to increase his tally as the season progresses.

The Argentine beat competition from arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk to the prestigious prize.

Messi has now won the Ballon d'Or award for the sixth time in his glorious football career playing for only Barcelona.
