Cristiano Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro has blasted Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk after mocking her brother at the 2019 Ballon d'Or award ceremony.

The Dutchman finished above Cristiano Ronaldo at this year's edition of the event put together to recognize excellence in the world of football.

As Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi won the prestigious prize following a goal-laden year which helped his club win the Spanish League title.

The Argentine won his sixth Ballon d'Or award - one more than his bitter rival in France earlier this week.

Meanwhile, when Van Dijk was asked whether it was one less competitor to worry about, he replied: "Was Cristiano Ronaldo really a rival?"

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star helped his national team win the maiden edition of the UEFA Nations League this year, having won the Euro Championship in 2016.

Though Netherlands lost the UEFA Nations League to Portugal, the Reds defender feels Ronaldo was never a rival.

Aveiro's post, translated from Portuguese by Metro, read: "Now, dear Virgil, where you are going, Cristiano Ronaldo has gone and has come a thousand times.

"You see, my dear Virgil, that Cristiano Ronaldo was a tri-champion in the country where you have been playing for years and you still haven’t got your hand in the can.

"Cristiano Ronaldo was even the best player and best scorer in the country where you play Virgil. By the way, I was even younger than you.

"Then, dear Virgil, Cristiano Ronaldo went to other places and became the greatest player in the history of a clubezito.
