Returning officer missing after LG polls in Niger

- A returning officer has been declared missing in Niger state

An unnamed returning officer in the just concluded local government elections in Niger state has been declared missing by the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Aminu Baba.

Baba made the declaration during a briefing with reporters on Monday, December 3, at the commission’s office in Minna, the state capital.

According to him, the victim is a lecturer at one of the tertiary institutions in the state. He also refused to disclose the name of the returning officer and the institution where he works, Channels TV reports.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that winners of the Niger state’s chairmanship and councillorship elections were announced by the SIEC.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won the chairmanship elections in 22 local government areas, consoling the lead opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with just one seat.

Legit.ng gathers that two local governments are yet to know the winners as their results have not been submitted.

Niger state has a total of the 25 local government areas.

According to the state electoral commission’s chairman, Aminu Baba, there were pockets of violence in some local governments in the state which disrupted the voting process on Saturday, November 30.

Baba, however, said that the challenges were surmounted and the elections were successfully concluded just as he thanked the security agencies for their support.

In a related development, the APC in Kebbi state won big on Saturday, October 26, as all its chairmanship candidates in the local government election were declared winners by the state’s electoral body.
