- But Melaye had described the Kogi election as fraud even before the announcement of the results
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered a great loss in the supplementary elections conducted in Kogi and Katsina states on Saturday, November 30.
Leadership reports that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) carried the day in both state as the party was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Legit.ng gathered that the party also cleared the local government election conducted in Niger state.
According to the report, the supplementary election in Kogi West senatorial district recorded comparative peace on Saturday, November 30.
It was learnt that the voting started with huge turnout peacefully in Lokoja and other areas of Kogi West, including Odolu in Kabba, Aiyetoro-Gbedde and Demonstration Primary School, Asuta ward, voting unit of PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.
In Katsina, the APC also defeated four other political parties to emerge winner in the Sabuwa constituency by-election into Katsina state House of Assembly INEC declared on Saturday, November 30.
The APC standard bearer, Ibrahim Danjuma, polled 11,747 votes to beat his closest rival, Ibrahim Shafiu, of the PDP with 6,160 votes.
The candidate of the MPN, Sagir Bako, polled 11 votes while the standard bearers of the NDLP and PDC, Ibrahim Sabiu and Dahiru Ahmed, garnered seven and 15 votes respectively.
The keenly contested poll witnessed large turn-out of voters in all the 74 polling units as voting began as early as 8am across the 10 wards of the Sabuwa local government area.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Katsina, Ibrahim Jubril Zarewa, who confirmed this on Saturday, November 30, stated that the poll was free and fair in all the voting points.
Also speaking with newsmen after monitoring the election in five of the 10 wards, the secretary to the government of the state, Mustapha Inuwa, expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements and peaceful conduct of the poll, adding that the concern of the state government was the hitch-free conduct of the by-election.
In his remarks before the results were declared, the state chairman of the opposition PDP, Salisu Yusuf Majigiri, who lauded the electoral process and the large turn-out of voters in the wards his team had monitored, pointed out that it was too early to declare whether his party would accept the outcome of the poll.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Senator Dino Melaye finally lost his bid for re-election into the Senate from Kogi West on the platform of the PDP.
