The federal government has revealed that it has concluded plans to develop and turn the large salts deposits in Ebonyi into commercial quantity.
This the governent said, would positively rub-off for growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the government and also generate thousands of jobs opportunity for the teeming youths in the state.
This was disclosed by the minsiter of state, mines and steel development, Dr Uchechukwu Ogah in Abakaliki.
Ledership reports that Dr Oga was on a courtesy call on Governor David Umahi when he made the statement and also proceeded to inspect some salt lakes in the state.
The minister said Ebonyi is one of the fore runner states in terms of solid mineral with great potentials adding that the federal government would benefit so much from the deposit through the diversify of the nation’s economy.
He disclosed that there is a federal government project called Presidential Initiative on Development of Salts and that consultants have been brought into Ebonyi state to look at how salt can be developed.
He said the initiative is the first in the history of the country driven by Governor Umahi which according to him, confirms the love President Muhammadu Buhari has for the southeast region.
His words: “We are here to seek collaboration with the governor in terms of optimization of our revenue, working closely with the state government to see how we can increase the revenue of the federal government through royalty.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has gladly granted opportunity for this project to be established.
“Number two reasons of my visit to the state is to discuss with the governor on how to enhance the revenue from the mining sector for the minerals that is being mined in the state.
“We have seen the composition of the salts in the state, we have seen the lakes and we believe.”
He also commended Governor Umahi for his developmental strides in the state.
Speaking earlier, Governor Umahi applauded President Buhari for the salt development project, describing Ebonyi as a state with great solid mineral potentials.
Meanwhile, after the federal government threatened to take action, the contractor handling Zing-Yakoko-Monkin road in Taraba has returned to site seven years after abandoning the project in the state.
The federal ministry of works and housing had in an advert recently threatened to revoke the contract if the contractor failed to return to site.
The project director, Engineer Ahmad Shehu said the contractors would start earth moving work and equipment will be brought in soon.
