Beware of politicians in Rivers, Wike cautions top army officers

Rivers governor, Nyesom Wike, has advised senior Nigerian Army senior officers posted to the state, not to allow themselves to be used by politicians.

Wike who made the comment on Friday, November 29, stated that the security architecture of a state suffers when politicians influence military operations.

The governor made the comment during a courtesy visit by the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, General Felix Agugo.

Gov Wike said some politicians make promises to military officers only to abandon them later.

He said: “Don’t allow politicians to use you. Otherwise, they will use and dump you. They will tell you that they will make you this or that, but at the appropriate time, all their phones would be switched off.

“Do the right thing and the society will move forward.”

The governor said if the military restricts themselves to their security duties, the country will be better for it.

He said security agencies had a responsibility to protect lives and property, noting that the Rivers state government would continue to support the military improve the security architecture.

Recall that a month ago, the Supreme Court upheld the election of Governor Wike after dismissing a petition filed by the African Action Congress and its candidate in the last governorship election, Awara Biokpomabo Festus.

The two unanimous judgments were delivered on Friday, October 25 by a seven-man panel of the apex court.
