The national president of Southern Youth Development Commission (SYDC), Bassey James, has lamented the role of corruption in the underdevelopment of the oil rich Niger Delta.
James also lamented the corruption in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) before the appointment of Godswill Akpabio as the minister
According to James who is also the founder of Southern Atlantic Polytechnic Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, the people at the helms of affair at the NDDC mismanaged the millions of naira pumped into the region through the commission.
Going further, James praised President Muhammadu Buhari for calling for the audit of the NDDC. He said the only way for the people of the region to benefit from the commission is through holistic probe and subsequent overhaul of the commission to efficiently deliver dividends.
He said the people of Niger Delta wants to see development, structures, capacity building and as a result of this, they are happy with Buhari over his directive on NDDC.
When asked on the roles of individuals in the development of the region, he noted that people have not been doing enough individually for the development of Niger Delta.
He said that on his part, he established a polytechnic with the aim of given people in the region easy access to skills acquisition programmes. He also noted that there is no reason for anybody in the Niger Delta not to have a skill with the establishment of the institution which can be partnered with just as Microsoft partnership on ground at the polytechnic.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Nigerian Senate and the presidency may have a fractured relationship over the passage of the 2019/2020 budget of the NDDC.
The Senate told President Buhari that it would not work on the NDDC budget unless the commission’s board members are sworn in.
