Manchester United defender Phil Jones has jokingly hinted that only his mother and father would attend his testimonial if he was given one at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has made just three appearances for the Red Devils across competitions so far this campaign having lost his spot to summer signing Harry Maguire.

His first Premier League start was his side's 3-3 draw against Sheffield United at the Bramall Lane last weekend, and he looked rusty in the game.

The England international joined Man United in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers in a €19.30 million deal but has failed to establish himself in the team.

Although he enjoyed some playing time during Jose Mourinho's reign, he has since the arrival of Maguire from Leicester City spent more time on the bench than ever.

He was however quoted to have cracked a joke back in March that: "only my mum and dad would turn up" if he was to have a testimonial at the Red Devils.

After his first year at Old Trafford, the defender was among the squad that won the Premier League at the end of the 2012-13 league season.

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson said in 2013 that: "Phil Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player.

"I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, no matter where we play him. At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch.”

Jones will hoping to get more playing time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having been handed his first start in the EPL last weekend.

But must compete for the position with the likes of Maguire, Lindelof and even Eric Bailly, who is expected back from injury next month.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Manchester United are plotting a £50 million bid for AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo when the January transfer window opens.

The 20-year-old has been superb for his Italian League side this campaign scoring five goals 17 appearances across competitions.

And his performances have attracted top European managers halfway into the 2019-20 season with the Red Devils topping the chart of clubs that might eventually secure his signature.
