Though the 2019 general elections have been concluded, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC's) job is far from being concluded.
Apart from the Kogi and Bayelsa gubernatorial elections held on Saturday, November 16, the electoral body will soon be conducting some rerun polls for vacant National Assembly seats.
This is as a result of some recent rulings in various appeal courts across the country, ordering INEC to conduct the elections after sacking some lawmakers.
Both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have benefited from and suffered the rulings.
This piece highlights top three PDP lawmakers whose elections have been upturned by the appeal courts.
1. Dino Melaye, Kogi West
An Abuja appeal court sacked the senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye.
The court ordered a re-run of the Election within 90 days. Melaye's election was challenged by Smart Adeyemi, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate. Though the rerun was conducted alongside the Kogi state governorship election, there is still no senator to occupy the Kogi West senatorial seat yet. This is because the rerun was declared inconclusive by INEC and Saturday, November 30, has been scheduled to conclude the poll.
2. Lazarus Nweru Ogbee, Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency, Ebonyi state
The appeal court sitting in Enugu, Enugu state, has also sacked the member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi state in the House of Representatives, Lazarus Nweru Ogbee.
Before his sack, Ogbee was the chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institutions (Prisons).
The court reaffirmed the tribunal judgment which had earlier ruled that the APC candidate, Comrade Chinedu Ogah, was the actual winner of the election.
The court, therefore, ordered INEC to issue Chinedu Ogah of the APC certificate of return.
3. Senator Christopher Ekpenyong, Ikot Ekpene senatorial district, Akwa Ibom state
Senator Christopher Ekpenyong, representing Ikot Ekpene senatorial district in Akwa Ibom state has also been sacked by the appeal court.
The court ordered a rerun election in Essien Udim Local Government Area (LGA) of the state within 90 days.
Senator Godswill Akpabio of the APC challenged Ekpenyong's election.
Meanwhile, a report by The Nation indicates that the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states have pitched senior PDP members against themselves.
According to the report, a N3billion largesse doled out by one of the party's governors to some influential members of the PDP in Abuja has triggered crisis within its fold.
Already, some aggrieved party members are clamouring for sanctions against the recipients of the said sum.
The party chieftains were said to have demanded N6 billion to facilitate the victory of the PDP’s candidates but got N3 billion as advanced payment.
