US 2020 election: Buttigieg, Biden lead ratings of Democrats’ presidential nominees

As the United States 2020 presidential election draws near, political pundits are taking time to analyse the ongoing debates of the presidential aspirants on the platform of the Democratic Party, popularly known as Democrats.

Some of the presidential nominees are: Former vice president Joe Biden, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and so on.

In the piece, provides a brief review of how the aspirants are faring so far, according to CNN’s political pundits.

In the fifth edition of the debate which took place on Wednesday, November 20, Paul Begala, a Democratic strategist and CNN political commentator, rated Pete Buttigieg as the winner.

According to Begala, Buttigieg “put in a competent performance” and did not suffer many attacks from his fellow aspirants.

He also commented on Joe Biden, saying he is staying through to his “Obamaesque” standing.

As Americans present at the debate shouted "Lock Him Up" at Donald Trump, Biden called for impartiality and accountability, “both in impeachment and at the ballot box.”

According to Sarah Isgur, another CNN political analyst, Biden’s performance in the last debate was not really impressive.

She, however, said the former vice president still has the best chance of getting the Democrats’ presidential ticket, despite the recent growing influence of Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren.

The focus of Errol Louis, the host of "Inside City Hall", is also on how Biden reacted to the chants by liberals asking him to lock Trump up (when he becomes president).

Louis, like Begala, said Biden’s response indicates he is following his former boss Barack Obama’s slogan: when they go low, we go high.

Biden, answering questions at the debate, said he would not order an investigation or prosecution of Trump if elected as the next US president.

He explained that he would allow his Justice Department to make independent decisions on who to prosecute or exonerate.

For Frida Ghitis, a former CNN correspondent, the women presidential nominees and moderators had a good day.

Ghitis’ focus, however, tilted more to Senator Kamala Harris whom she said gave “the most effective, thoughtful, impressive response of the night” when asked questions on Trump’s foreign policy.

Harris, according to the analyst, dissected and exposed everything wrong with President Trump’s foreign policy.

She said America is respected because it keeps its word, but Trump has turned its back on previous agreements and on allies, adding the US president is the greatest threat to our national security.

Similarly, Ghitis also believed that Biden’s performance at the last debate was unimpressive.

Jen Psaki, another CNN political commentator, also noted that Buttigieg was not heavily attacked at the debate by his fellow nominees.

She said it would be unwise if the other aspirants decided not to take him up because they don't take his candidacy seriously.

Julian Zelizer, also a CNN political analyst, rated Senator Harris higher in the debate.

“Senator Kamala Harris was far ahead of her colleagues tonight, delivering a number of sharp and direct attacks against the administration,” he said.
