Kogi Decides: PDP rejects governorship election results, demands cancellation of poll

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday, November 17, said it was rejecting the results of the governorship election in Kogi state as was being officially declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

PDP's statement announcing its stand against the election came as INEC announced the results of the election in some local government areas in the state showing that Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was taking the lead.

The election was declared by witnesses, participants and observers as one riddled with violence, deaths, ballot snatching and other forms of malpractices. Some also called for the cancellation of the poll.

Reacting to the results so far declared by INEC, the PDP, in a statement by its national spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, asked the commission to cancel the election in most of the areas with contending outcomes.

The PDP insisted that the many of the results were doctored as what was declared at the local government collation centres are purely different from what INEC was announcing.

It described the results from Okene and other areas announced by INEC as fictitious.

"The party demands the immediate cancellation of such allocated results, particularly in Okene local government area.

"The party maintains that nobody can accept the provocative alteration of results from polling units as well as allocation of fictitious votes, particularly the awarding of 112, 000 votes to APC in Okene," the PDP said.

It noted that there was glaring evidence of alterations of figures which reduced the vote of the PDP and allocated imported figures to the APC.

While warning INEC not to ever declare what it called mutilated results, it expressed suspicion that Yahaya Bello and his APC may have compromised officials of the electoral umpire for figures to be doctored.

"The PDP therefore cautions the INEC to note that any attempt to declare the figures being bandied for the APC will be a validation of the bribery allegation.

The only way out is for INEC to cancel and drop the fictitious figures being bandied and declare only the results from votes cast and declared at the respective polling units," the party warned.

Legit.ng reported that the violence that took over the election in the state resulted in the death of a nephew to Senator Dino Melaye, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the re-run for the legislative seat.
