- The FRSC and DSS have cracked down on syndicates who specialised in Kano and Kebbi states who specialise in the production of illegal number plates
- The arrest was made in connection with the viral fake Kano ‘Chip Whip’ number plate sighted on social media recently
- FRSC spokesman said the suspects have been remanded in prison following their not guilty plea in court
Nigeria's social media space recently went agog when a photo of a customised plate number allegedly belonging to the chief whip of the Kano state House of Assembly surfaced online.
Instead of Chief Whip, the number plate displayed a glaring spelling error, as it has inscribed on it ‘CHIP WHIP’, causing sarcastic and hilarious reactions from Nigerians.
Many who also condemned the development put the blame on the government agency responsible for issuing number plates.
The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, subsequently ordered an investigation into the origin of the scandalous number plate.
The investigation appears to have yielded results as the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the FRSC announced the arrest of some syndicates in Kano and Kebbi states in connection with the production of illegal number plates, including the fake Kano ‘Chip Whip’ Number Plate.
Bisi Kazeem, FRSC's spokesman, disclosed this on Saturday, November 16, in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Kazeem said the corps also arrested some syndicates at the Dodaru market, Gwandu local government area of Kebbi state who specialise in selling illegal number plates to motorcyclists.
“The suspects were arraigned on Friday before the Chief Magistrate Court 1 Birnin Kebbi. The accused pleaded not guilty but were remanded in prison custody by the Chief Magistrate till 28 November, 2019 when the case will be represented for hearing.
“The Corps Marshal who expressed satisfaction over the fruitful synergy thanked the Director-General DSS, Mr Yusuf Bichi, for the prompt professional response deployed to arrest the perpetrators of this high level of illegality," he said.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Honourable Ayuba Durum, the Kano state House of Assembly chief whip, said that the circulated “chip whip” number plate is the handwork of mischievous elements.
He said it is an attempt to attack his personality and spoil the reputation of the people in the state and its leadership.
The chief whip reacted to the misspelling on the plate number, saying it is not outrageous but a very false one as he does not even have an official car yet.
