Bayelsa election: Goodluck Jonathan’s hometown calm ahead of the poll
- There is what can be described as an uncomfortable calm in Otuoke, the hometown of Goodluck Jonathan, former president of Nigeria, ahead of the election in Bayelsa
- Legit.ng observes that there are no security operatives stationed anywhere in the community except in the homes of the former president and his mother
- Residents of the community are also said to be wondering if the election would hold in their domain like in the other parts of the state
Legit.ng correspondent on the ground in Bayelsa state ahead of the governorship election on Saturday, November 16, can report that there is an unnerving calm in Otuoke, the hometown of Nigeria's former president, Goodluck Jonathan.
During a visit to the community on Friday, November 15, the sleepy town was without any form of the usual major activities preceding a governorship election.
There were no signs of security personnel in the community in spite of the reports of violence reported in some parts of the state.
The people of the area were also seen peacefully going about their businesses.
Only the homes of Jonathan and his mother had the presence of security operatives in the town.
One of the motorcycle riders in the community who spoke with Legit.ng, explained that he is unsure that there would be an election in Otuoke like it would happen in other areas of the state.
When asked why the entire community seemed dryish barely 24 hours to the election, the man who would not mention his name, said in pidgin English: “My brother, I don’t understand myself o.
“I don dey ask people whether we dey truly do election tomorrow abi dem dey deceive us.”
Legit.ng earlier reported that a Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja cleared the All Progressives Congress (APC) to participate in the governorship election in Bayelsa state.

In a ruling on Thursday, November 14, the appellate court panel led by Justice Steven Adah also cleared the APC deputy governorship candidate, Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo for the November 16 election.
