Several supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) including the speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Monday Obolo Bobou, have defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC) ahead of the governorship election in the state.
The Sun reports that the chairman of the Southern Ijaw local government council, Nigeria Kia, was also among the defectors who are all from his local government.
The former special adviser to the state governor on waterways security, Tony Oki, led the defectors to the APC. He said the strong indication that Bayelsans are tired of the PDP government prompted their decision to join the APC.
The new members were received by the APC governorship candidate, David Lyon, who stated that the party will defeat the PDP.
Lyon promised to ensure the provision of social amenities and gainful employment for the people if elected.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson has told the people of the state that voting against the PDP in the November 16 governorship election would amount to betraying the trust of PDP faithful nationwide.
Dickson made the statement during a radio broadcast on Sunday night, November 10.
The governor urged the people of the state to keep faith with the party and vote for the candidate of the party, Senator Douye Diri.
He said the faithful of the party who supported former President Goodluck Jonathan to become president would be disappointed if the people of Bayelsa dumped PDP for the opposition APC.
