Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been declared the rightful winner of the 2019 governorship election in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Court of Appeal sitting on Saturday, November 9 held that Sanwo-Olu was duly elected in the polls which was held on Saturday, March 9.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Hannatu Sankey, who described the appeal as lacking in merit.
“I hereby uphold the judgment of the Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal,” she ruled.
In reaching the judgment, the five-man panel dismissed the appeal by the governorship candidates of Labour Party (LP) and Alliance for Democracy (AD). It upheld the initial judgment of the elections petition tribunal which declared Sanwo-Olu as winner on September 23.
The panel ruled that the appellants did not prove beyond reasonable doubt that Sanwo-Olu was mentally incompetent to occupy the position of governor.
Also, the panel ruled that they did not show adequate evidence to prove their claims of collusion between security agencies and Sanwo-Olu's party, the All Progressives Congress, to manipulate the election.
The court further awarded costs against the two appellants totaling N2.4million in favour of six of the seven respondents joined in the petition.
Legit.ng had previously reported Governor Sanwo-Olu's victory when he scaled the first hurdle in a petition filed by the LP and AD, challenging his victory during March 9 poll.
The state election petition tribunal sitting in the Ikeja dismissed the petitions. The tribunal had equally dismissed both petitions for lack of merit.
