Tanker heavy laden with fuel falls in Awka

- Another tanker heavily laden with fuel has fallen in Anambra state

- The tanker was said to haven along Zik Avenue in Awka, the capital city of Anambra state

- Also, Police officers of the Anambra Police command have managed to cordon some of the resident crowding the area off

Some residents of Awka, the capital city of Anambra state on Saturday, November 9, have scampered for their safety after a petrol laden tanker fell in the town.

Daily Trust reports that the fuel loaded tanker fell this morning along the Zik Avenue Road spilling its product on the road.

While some of the residents were seen scampering for safety probably due to fear of an explosion, others were also scooping the spilt petroleum product from the ground.

It was also gathered that Police officers of the Anambra Police command have managed to cordon some of the resident crowding the area off.

Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra state Police command, Haruna Muhammed, said the fuel-laden tanker fell into a ditch in Zike Avenue

Muhammed, a superintendent of Police also said the petroleum product started spilling after the tanker fell causing some resident to start scooping fuel on the ground.

He said: “It is highly advisable you alert residents in the Area through your medium to stay clear from the premises in order to prevent any disaster."

He also said that his team have cordoned people off the area while those who were scooping fuel have asked to stop that too.

Muhammed also noted that the Anambra state's Fire Service department have been notified to remain on standby to prevent any form of explosion or fire incident.

Speaking on the inferno, the Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, sympathised with victims and assured that the state government planned to compensate owners of properties damaged by the inferno.
