Ruth Lawanson: Nigerian-born athlete who has achieved great things in US

There is an increasing population of Nigerians flying the nation high in virtually every field. Ruth Lawson, a Nigerian-born US athlete, is one of those people.

She is presently 56-years-old and played college volleyball at Fresno State in 1982 where she got the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in three different years of 1982, 1983, and 1984.

During her senior year, she took her team, the Bulldogs to the fifth place at the NCAA tournament. Later on, she was named Fresno State Female Athlete of the Year before she was included in its Hall of Fame.

From 1989 to 1992, she played for the US national team where some of the competitions she played on were the 1990 world championships, 1991 world cup, and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Later on, she became a volleyball coach. However, before getting that position, she started out as an assistant at Purdue, UNLV, US Air Force Academy, before she became the head coach at San Angelo state.

She has also been a member of the board of directors of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Ogwumike is a Nigerian-American basketballer and also doubles as a TV analyst for National Basketball Association (NBA) for ESPN.

She recently joined the Constituency of Africa (CFA), an organisation that is at the center of Africans in the United States.

CFA was founded in 1990 out of the need to create an organisation that would be vested in building an organised support for Africa in the US.

The constituency is also charged with educating the states on Africa and creating programmes that are targeted at empowering Africans and African people.

It should also be noted that one of CFA's very important events is the annual Ronald H Brown African Affairs Series which is in honour of the late US commerce secretary for his great works.
