A staff of Radio Nigeria in Benue, Patrick Kumbul, have been killed by some hoodlums in Markudi on Saturday, November 2.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, November 3, the spokesperson for the Benue state Police command, Sewuese Anene, said Kumbul, the head of ICT at the Radio Nigeria Harvest FM in Makurdi, was killed alongside one Shongo Wuester along Amokachi Lane, Low-Level Makurdi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Anene said that the body of the victims have been deposited at the morgue as Police in the state has commenced a full investigation into the killing.
Reacting to the killing of his colleague, the general manager of Radio Nigeria, Akange Nyagba, he was playing draft with some friends some metres away from where Kumbul sat before the incident.
Nyagba said they did not even notice that the deceased had left the area when they heard gunshots within the neighbourhood.
“It is true, I was within the vicinity, five meters away from where the incident took place. We were playing draft with friends very close to where he sat within his neighbourhood but we didn’t know the time he left," Nyagba said.
He said it was after the gunshots that they rushed to discover Kumbul was shot.
Nyagba said the gunmen -six of them - allegedly dressed like operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad were on motorcycles.
He added that Kumbul's neighbour who sought the identity of the alleged SARS operatives was also killed for making such inquiry.
“They actually came for Engineer. After killing him they wanted to go so one of his neighbours wanted to know the identity of any of them but they turned back and killed him too,” he said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Benue Police had earlier discovered hidden graves in Gbatse village in the state.
The bodies, of about nine people, were suspected to have been killed by criminals in Ushongo local government area of the state.
