Southampton had all men behind the ball in the second as the Citizens dominated all of the proceedings but could not find a way through the water-tight defence.

But City's persistence finally paid-off in the 70th minute as Kyle Walker drove in a low cross to Aguero who was on hand to tap-in on his first touch.

Alex McCarthy reacted brilliantly to Bernardo Silva's 78th minute strike but the goalkeeper conceded a dangerous free-kick inside the penalty box after handling a back-pass.

Kevin De Bruyne could not convert the resulting set-piece as City were frustrated by the Saints.

But with less than five minutes left, Southampton's stubborn resistance was finally broken as McCarthy's poor clearance fell kindly to Walker who tucked the ball home to make it 2-1.

Guadiola's men held on to seal the victory and earn all three points as they keep pace with league leaders Liverpool.
