- Ebonyi state governor David Umahi has sacked one of his aides, Ndubisi Itumo
- Itumo, who was Umahi's aide on social media, was sacked for misinforming the public

David Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi state, has terminated the appointment of his social media aide, Ndubisi Itumo, for allegedly disseminating false information to the public.
Legit.ng notes that this is coming few hours after Nigeria's information minister, Lai Mohammed, announced that the federal government would be taking strong measures against the menace of social media misinformation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Itumo's sack, which took effect immediately, was announced in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Kenneth Ugbala.
“The termination is on the grounds of misconduct bordering on misinforming the public.
“Consequently, Itumo is directed to handover all government property in his possession to the Principal Secretary to the Governor,” he said.
While many people have benefited immensely from the opportunities made available by social media, some have experienced the negative side as their activities on the social platforms caused them their jobs and other important opportunities.
Barely a year ago, Legit.ng reported how a single tweet got a popular Nigerian developer, Prosper Otemuyiwa, removed from the covetous Google Developer Expert program.
In May 2018, Otemuyiwa was still a member of the Google program until he “responded to a silly tweet that was also a response to a Twitter thread made by an ex-Andela software developer.”
Prosper’s Google Developer Expert journey “came to a halt abruptly because of a tweet. Yes, a tweet! I’ll repeat that….A TWEET!!!,” he said in an article on his Medium page titled "2018 In Review: Shattering Expectations".
