- Diego Maradona was back to his old club Newell as opposition manager
- His side Gimnasia beat Newell 4-0 in a potentially game-changing win for the 59-year old's side
- Notably, Newell fans were full of nothing but love for their old boy as they serenaded him, and handed him a special chair for the match
Argentine legend Diego Maradona was given an odd heroes’ welcome despite making his return to his old club Newell's Old Boys as opposition manager.
Despite only playing a handful of games for Newell’s Old Boys in 1993, the fans deemed it fit to give him a grand welcome as he led his current side Gimnasia out for the game.
His former club even afforded the World Cup winner a pitch-side throne so he could watch the game from the most enviable position in the stadium.

Maradona has had his Gimnastic side endure a torrid start to the new season, and despite the Argentine taking over after the first few games, he was initially unable to turn the team’s fortunes around.
Legit.ng earlier reported that the 59-year old Maradona had resorted to demoting several first team players to the reserves in a bid to instill some discipline and perhaps turn the team’s fortunes around.
His hard stance seems to have reaped dividend finally as Gimnastic, who were rooted at the bottom of the Argentine first division, went on to thrash Newell 4-0 at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
Prior to the match, Maradona was still feeling the love for the side he played for more than 26 years ago as they packed the concourse outside his hotel room a night before the big game.
The eager away crowd chanted his name outside his hotel room and Maradona was all too willing to oblige as he joined them in singing chants, occasionally dancing for the acres of people who were camped outside his hotel balcony.
At the stadium, cameramen struggled to take his pictures moments after Maradona was presented with his ‘special seat’.
The win coupled with some royal treatment incidentally came at a time when Maradona was almost obliged to feel special as he turned 59 on Wednesday, October 30.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Mesut Ozil has pleaded with Arsenal fans and players to stick together in the wake of Granit Xhaka's controversy with fans.
