A former deputy national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Annie Okonkwo, has stated that it is the turn of the Igbos to produce Nigeria's next president in 2023.

Okonkwo, who is also a former governorship candidate under the party in Anambra state, said there will be dire consequences if power remains in the North beyond 2023.

He made the statement while granting an interview with Vanguard newspaper on the debates regarding the 2023 presidency.

He, however, expressed confidence that an Igbo man would be given the opportunity to be Nigeria's president in 2023.

“It has come to a stage where people from the southeast should be considered by the major political parties. It is not about resources but equity,” he said.

He said the southeast deserves the presidency in the spirit of fairness, urging all political parties to field Igbo candidates in 2023.

“The time has come for the southeast to produce the president. President Buhari and every other person should ensure that power returns to the south since the presidency has always been a north and south affair.

“In the south, it should be micro-zoned to the southeast because the southwest and south-south have ruled for eight years and six years respectively,” Okonkwo said.

Okonkwo urged all Nigerians to support the southeast, it would do a lot for equity and strengthening the country's unity.

“If people continue to insist that power must remain in the north because the president comes from the north, they may have their way, but their action would divide Nigeria the more.

“If you are a president, the best thing to do is to embrace those ideas that would unite the country, not to divide it. If we have a united country, it would benefit everyone,” he said.
