Odion Ighalo, former Super Eagles forward, will battle the pair of Samuel Chukwueze and Super Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala for the Footballer of Year honour during this year’s Nigerian Sports Award.
Organisers of the Nigerian Sports Awards disclosed this on Thursday, October 24, during a ceremony to unveil the three top nominees for the 15 categories of the annual award.

The trio of Ighalo, Chukwueze and Oshoala were shortlisted for the Footballer of Year award after reviewing their performances for both club and country in 2019.
China-based Ighalo was in action for Nigeria as the Super Eagles emerged bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The former Watford forward scored five times to cart home the Golden Boot at the tournament.
On the other hand, Chukwueze, who was among Super Eagles stars at the AFCON, was among the top performers at the biennial tournament.
In addition, the Nigerian international Chukwueze was superb for Villarreal during the 2018-2019 campaign, claiming the La Liga side revelation player award.
The ex-Golden Eaglets star is also in the running for the best U-21 players in Europe by France Football after he made the 10-man shortlist for the Kopa Trophy, an award for the best performing U21 player of the year.
Equally, Oshoala made the cut courtesy of decent performance for Barcelona FC women team since joining the Spanish giants.
The former Africa Footballer of the year also set a record as the first African to score in a UEFA Women’s Champions League final during Barcelona’s 4-1 loss to Lyon.
Oshoala, who had the privilege of winning the BBC Africa Footballer of the year, was also in action as Nigeria claimed her 11 titles during Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2018.
