Bamisope Adeyanju: Nigerian lawyer awarded $50,000 scholarship to study at Columbia University

Bamisope Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, and current masters student at Columbia University School of Law in New York City, has made the nation really proud.

She was awarded a whopping $50,000 scholarship by the global law firm called Baker Mckenzie. It should be noted that Bamisope finished from the Nigerian Law School in 2015.

Afterwards, she worked with the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project in Lagos where she was the head of a team that traced down a big sum N388.304 billion in London Paris Club Loan refunds.

At the Columbia university, she is said to be working under two great experts in international human rights, Professor Sarah Cleveland and Visiting Professor Amal Clooney.

She is looking at specializing on environmental challenges on the continent and to work towards the expansion of transparency laws in Africa.

In presenting the award, Constanze Ulmer-Eilfort, the executive committee member of the prize, said the body is very delighted to give the scholarship to “such a deserving and hardworking candidate.”

The Nigerian lawyer said though she did not really know what law was as a young child, she has always wanted to help people.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Solomon Serwanjja, an investigative journalist with the NBS Television in Uganda, achieved a big milestone in his journalism career as he won the 2019 BBC World Service Komla Dumor Award.

In a video interview, the Uganda journalist said he could not believe the news when he was called and announced as the recipient of the recognition.

He said the award was a big vote of confidence in Ugandan journalism, adding that the prize is a source of encouragement to African journalists to be able to get quality training.
