Flooding: Lekki residents issue 21-day ultimatum to Sanwo-Olu

- Residents of Lekki area of Lagos state have lamented flooding, terrible state of roads and tolling in Ibeju-Lekki and Eti-Osa local government areas

- The residents have issued a fresh 21-day ultimatum to the Lagos state government to act on their situations

Residents of Lekki area of Lagos state have issued a fresh 21-day ultimatum to the Lagos state government to act on the pathetic state of flooding, terrible state of roads and tolling in Ibeju-Lekki and Eti-Osa local government areas.

The residents, who gave the ultimatum under the aegis of Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki Coalition, said they would begin mass action if the Lagos state government fails to yield to their requests.

The coalition is made up of the Lekki-Eti-Osa Forum, Nigerian Bar Association, in alliance with other civil society groups including but not limited to Take-it-back Movement, Anti-Lekki Tolling Movement, Coalition of Eti-Osa House of Representatives and Assembly Candidates, Eti-Osa Development Initiative and Ibeju-Lekki Movement.

According to the coalition, plans have been perfected by the Lekki Concession Company to introduce mandatory E-Tag at the Ikoyi link bridge toll plaza by Friday, November 1, 2019 .

In a statement signed by the secretary of the Lekki-Eti-Osa Forum, Nigerian Bar Association, Ayo Ademiluyi, the residents of Lekki lamented lack of road upgrade and drainage systems in the area.

The coalition, which visited Legit.ng on Tuesday, October 22, said it would be holding a town hall meeting and mass protest scheduled for Saturday, October 26.

Also at Legit.ng with Ademiluyi was Comrade Oyebiyi Adewole, Alimo-based community activist, and Comrade Elizabeth Ekanem, coordinator of Take-It-Back Movement, Eti-Osa and Ibeju Lekki local government areas.

Ademiluyi said: "By virtues of chapter 2 of the constitution of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), it mandates government at all levels to work in the interest of the mass majority of the Nigerian people to preserve the environment in a way that guarantees the safety of the Nigerian people

"But otherwise is the case in Nigeria and particularly in Lagos state, where you find out that government has not fulfilled that mandate of undertaking all necessary steps to preserve the safety of the people."

The coalition called on the Lagos state government to engage in wider consultation about combating the challenges of security, environment and infrastructure in Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki local government areas .

The statement read: "The coalition will be holding the Save Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki town hall meeting as a step in the consultation process with community and other interest groups on Saturday, 26th October, 2019 at Jakande Open Field, Jakande, Lekki, Lagos state by 10am."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Lagos residents counted their losses following the havoc wreaked on their buildings and properties by early morning heavy rain.
