Jega: CIA’s prediction on Nigeria's breakup may come to pass if care is not taken

- Attahiru Jega, former INEC boss, has said that proper care must be taken so that Nigeria does not break up as predicted by CIA

- Jega also said that the low turnout of voters and their indifference in electoral process may be connected to the postponement of elections in 2015 and 2019

- The former INEC boss also said that there has been reversal in the country's progress since 2015 general election

The former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has said that if proper care is not taken, US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)’s prediction that Nigeria would break will come to pass.

The former INEC boss said this on Wednesday, October 23, during his speaking engagement at Tell Magazine’s conference in Abuja tagged 20 Years of Democracy, The Cable reports.

It should be noted that four year ago, before the 2015 election, the CIA predicted that the country would disintegrate. That was before former president Goodluck Jonathan handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jega said that the country’s progress has encountered some “reversals” since the one it made during the 2015 general elections. He added that there are a lot to be done to ensure the integrity of the nature before the next general election in 2023.

“The CIA thought that 2015 was the do or die period for Nigeria, that there would not be a Nigeria in the way you know after the 2015 general election - that has come to pass, but I think if we do not take care, a lot of these predictions will come to pass, that is why we need to do quite a lot, much more than we have ever done in order to protect the integrity of the electoral process before 2023,” he said.

He also said the electorates do not have trust in the country’s electoral process anymore, adding that the trust has been reducing since the 1999 general elections.
