Many injured as SARS, residents clash in Taraba state

- Some small business owners in Taraba state have accused SARS operatives of vandalising their shops

- Operatives of SARS had on Tuesday, October 22 stormed the Mile 6 area of the state capital, Jalingo

- The traders said in carrying out their duties, the operatives harassed and injured some innocent persons

A report by Daily Sun indicates that operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Taraba State Police Command on Tuesday, October 22 injured several residents in the Mile 6 area of the state capital, Jalingo.

According to the report, the SARS personnel also vandalised shops and other business centres in the area.

An eye witness interviewed in the report, Mr. Bitrus Kumai, said residents heard sporadic gunshots in the early hours of the day and later discovered that it was the SARS operatives responsible for the shooting.

He said the operatives brutalised anyone they saw, destroyed provision stores, beer-drinking joints and several other small businesses in the area.

A provision shop owner, Thomas Audu lamented that his shop was vandalised while he was attending to costumers.

Audu estimated the cost of damage to his shop at N300,000 and appealed to the state government to intervene.

Also, Mrs. Blessing Aboki, a local beer seller, who said the incident made many customers run away with her money, claimed that she lost N80, 000.

Mr. Paul Kamai, who runs a beer drinking joint in the area, said the SARS team vandalised chairs, tables, refrigerator, generator set, drinks and assaulted costumers who were relaxing there.

The police public relations officer in the state, David Misal, who confirmed the incident, said youths in the area had mobilised to resist the arrest of a notorious criminal in the area leading to a confrontation.

Meanwhile, unknown gunmen on Tuesday, October 15 invaded Malum community in Ardo-Kola local government area of the state and kidnapped one Reverend Solomon Jediel.

The assailants contacted the family members shortly after and informed them to start saving money for his ransom.
