But the long wait for a goal in the match finally came as Hudson-Ndoi turned provider at the near post for Alonso to drill his shot past the Magpies keeper to make it 1-0 in the 73rd minute.

And that was how it stood until the remaining parts of the game as Lampard's young side continued their impressive run in the league to record their fifth win of the season.

The Blues are now a point above Leicester City who defeated Burnley to move into second position on the log.
