Rauf Aregbesola, the minister of interior, has said that government must think ‘out of the box’ to be able to improve welfare of prison inmates in the country.
Aregbesola stated this on Friday, October 18, during the 2020 budget defence before the joint senate and house of representatives committee on Interior, Daily Trust reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the minister decried congestion and welfare challenges in various correctional facilities across the country.
According to him, the limited resources allotted to the sector will not be enough to surmount its numerous challenges.
Aregbesola said: “We will be creative and innovative in our approach this time around, so that we can turn our correctional facilities to enterprise centres.
“By that, a lot could be achieved by turning the place around, saving the government some burden and make life better for all citizens either outside or inside the prison.
“We are also planning a meeting with the Nigerian Governors Forum in order to sensitise them on what they should do to make sure aspect of criminal justice administration is not neglected. There will be serious problems if all of us failed to come together to solve it."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, called for the de-radicalisation of Nigerian youths roaming the streets across the country.
During a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service headquarters in Abuja on Friday, August 23, Aregbesola directed the service to collaborate with all relevant government agencies, civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations to ensure that Nigerian youth get the best of opportunities.
The minister also called on the officers of the NCS to support the federal government in its efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for Nigerians.
