Kogi election: Elders settle for Yahaya Bello ahead of governorship poll

Some elders in Kogi West senatorial district have castigated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for allegedly being desperate to win the state's governorship election.

The position of the elders was made in a statement by the media and publicity committee of the Bello/Onoja governorship campaign council, which said it was pleased with the elders' collective decision to endorse the governor for a second term.

Kingsley Fanwo, spokesperson of the committee, in the statement, discredited PDP's claim that David Jemibewon, a retired Army general, was not a part of the endorsement of Governor Bello.

While insisting that the denial was a 'panicky move by the PDP to save its face', Fanwo maintained that the Kogi West leaders forum met with the governor and discussed improving governance in the state as well as the role they hope to play in assisting him.

"It is a tradition that such a meeting is followed by a statement by the noble group made up of statesmen who have excelled in their chosen professions. The statement from the forum aptly captured the resolutions reached at the meeting.

"It is unfortunate that the PDP was desperate to harass Gen David Jemibewon (Rtd) to disown the resolutions even though the statesman attended the meeting as a Kogi West indigene," the statement said adding that the endorsement of Bello is not partisan but patriotic since the members belong to different political parties and ideologies.

“To the elders, the second term ambition of the governor represents equity and hope that the state will continue to oscillate on the rotor of justice and fairness.

"The Kogi West elders expressed determination to key into the unity agenda of the present administration in the state," the statement said while commending the elders for supporting the second term bid of the governor.
