The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has hit Nigeria's main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for allegedly failing to perform its duties as an opposition party.

Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC’s national publicity secretary, said Nigeria is turning to a one-party state because the PDP has failed to play a vibrant role which is needed to deepen the country’s democracy, Daily Trust reports.

Issa-Onilu said the PDP has become ineffective just as he added that the ruling APC recognised and welcomed intelligent critique of its policies.

The APC spokesman said Nigeria’s political system is built with the plan that the opposition parties will play important roles such as providing credible alternative standpoints.

He, however, claimed that the PDP has failed in this regard, adding that the opposition party is only distracting the government with their alleged baseless comments and allegations.

Issa-Onilu also hit the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), saying it could have replaced the PDP as the lead opposition party instead of turning itself into a part of the PDP.

In its reaction, the PDP said it would not allow Nigeria to slip into a one-party state, adding that it is playing its role as a vibrant opposition party.

The PPD spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the party would not relent in playing opposition role to ensure Nigerians enjoy good governance.

Ologbondiyan also expressed optimism that the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would win at the Supreme Court.
