- The presidency has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of not carrying out its duty of constructive opposition in Nigeria
- This remark was specifically made by the presidential aide on media and publicity, Garba Shehu
- Shehu said that in every democratic setting where there is not opposition, governance will be seriously affected
The presidency has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of being redundant instead of acting as measure of checks and balance as required in all modern democratic settings.
The senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said that democracy in the country will not be balanced if the PDP fails to carry out its fundamental duty of constructive criticism of the ruling party, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Shehu further said that failure of the opposition to do what is expected of it, governance in Nigeria will definitely be affected.
He said that the PDP is rather preoccupied with distracting Nigerians with its post-election battles and lawsuits.
The presidential media aide said: "In the absence of either weight or counterweight, the scales of democracy become imbalanced. This cannot continue for long without the full functioning of governance being affected."
As an example, Shehu pointed to the fact that the PDP has remained silent about the recent reintroduction of the anti-sexual harassment legislation to the Senate.
He added: "Many will, of course, see the opposition’s fake news and failure to hold the government to account fully and sanely for what it is: dereliction of duty."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the PDP had said that the N10.7 projection of the 2020 budget presidented by President Buhari would further lead Nigerians into poverty.
The opposition party, on its official Twitter page alleged that the budget was designed only for the rich and well-place in the country, not for the common man.
