And a minute after the restart Spain got their noses in front as Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul rifled in a shot from outside of the 18-yard area to make it 1-0.
The Scandinavians piled up the pressure as they exposed the Spanish defence and created lots of chances.
But their persistence finally paid off as Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga fouled Omar Elabdellaoui as English referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot for a penalty.
King stepped up and made the resulting spot-kick count as Norway deservedly earned a point to keep the Euro 2020 qualification hopes alive.
Spain will play second placed side Sweden in their next game and a win for them will automatically guarantee their place in the Euro 2020 championships next summer.
