Nigerian Abdulkarim Bashir: Nigerian developer beats 750 from 73 countries, clinhes $10k prize

Another Nigerian in tech, Abdulhakim Bashir, on Wednesday, October 9, became the winner of another international competition.

He won in the Artificial Intelligence category of the Startup Innovation competition which was put together by the Dubai’s World Trade Centre, Daily Trust reports.

It should be noted that the competition was borne out of the need to stir up the innovativeness in young owners of startups.

The Nigerian champion invented Chiniki Guard, a security application targeted at curbing shoplifting in shops and general theft.

“Chiniki Guard provides real-time updates on the activities going on in a retail store. It reports theft and shoplifting by analyzing the video feed through the Closed Circuit TV,” he said.

According to him, the application has the potential of stopping over 80% shops from avoidable losses that are caused by theft and dishonest workers.

Bashir won a whopping sum of $10,000 for his novel app. Dr Amina Sambo, the coordinator of startups in the country told Daily Trust that the victory is a further proof that the nation’s youths have great potential in information technology.

Quoted Replies is a bot made for twitter that allows users on the micro messaging site to find quoted comments on tweets without having to go through the hassle of searching the platform.

The bot is a big advancement on the ‘retweet with comment’ feature that the social media platform introduced some years ago which allows user to quote a tweet with their comment.
