- Ijaw youths are grateful that President Muhammadu Buhari is still funding the presidential amnesty programme

- The youths said the sustenance of the programme is key to the peace and stability in the Niger Delta region

- They also praised the coordinator of the programme, Prof Charles Dokubo, for his impact in the initiative

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his continued support of the presidential amnesty programme.

The IYC was reacting to the allocation of N65billion for the programme in the 2020 Budget by the Buhari administration.

A statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, October 9 and signed by the spokesmen of the group, Daniel Dasimaka said the budget would enable the Prof Charles Dokubo-led amnesty office build the capacity of beneficiaries of the programme.

The group further noted that the sustenance of the programme would integrate the beneficiaries into proper and productive members of the Niger Delta and Nigerian society.

The group said the fact that the president acknowledged the vital role played by the sustained peace in the Niger Delta is a testament to the usefulness of the programme.

“Without the proper management of the programme, the story would have been different today,” the statement noted.

The statement noted that Prof Dokubo's background as an eminent scholar with a robust understanding of concrete realities and developmental challenges of the Niger Delta region is responsible for the successes recorded so far in the programme.

The group said Prof Dokubo's achievements are not only commendable but could also serve as a model for other countries in the subregion.

Recall that a group, Ijaw Renaissance Coalition, recently condemned what they described as an intense campaign of calumny mounted against Professor Dokubo.

In a press statement sent to journalists on Sunday, September 29, the group accused some faceless groups of spreading imaginary corruption charges to disparage Dokubo and cast aspersions on his personality.
