Senior lawyer Wahab Shittu lists perspectives to lecturers' harassment scandal

- Top Nigerian lawyer, Wahab Shittu, says the recent documentary on sexual harassment against some lecturers calls for sober reflection

Wahab Shittu, a top lawyer in Nigeria, on Wednesday, October 9, expressed sadness over the situation at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where two lecturers are hit with sexual harassment scandals.

Shittu, a graduate of the institution, said he had remained in mourning mood since he watched the documentary released by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

According to him, the development calls for sober reflections.

"On a personal level, it is sad, very sad, that UNILAG, my alma mater, is in the spotlight on account of this documentary, unfortunately for wrong reasons.

"l am also worried that many innocent lecturers working assiduously for the system (and these ones are legion) are being tarred with a general brush of sex for grades tag and the danger to the system is inculcable," Shittu said.

The prominent lawyer said a second perspective or lesson to learn is the fact that the situation calls for soul searching individually and collectively on the imperative to cleanse and sanitise the system for a robust academic environment for learning, research and development.

"We must take lessons derived from the two perspectives seriously as we move forward from this very sad episode," he added.

Legit.ng earlier listed six lecturers who have been entangled in the web of sexual harassment allegations from their students. While some of them have been sacked, others are on suspension.
