Nigeria has recorded tremendous progress in degrading Boko Haram insurgents, President Muhammadu Buhari has said.
The president made the claim at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) base in Kaduna, while inaugurating 111 cadets as pilot officers, The Cable reports.
Legit.ng gathers that Buhari, who was represented by the chief of defense staff, Abayomi Olonisakin, said those trying to destabilise the country have been frustrated.
He asked the newly commissioned officers to make use of new tactics to confront “our common enemies”.
He said: “The armed forces of Nigeria has recorded tremendous progress in degrading the capacity of Boko Haram terrorists, thereby securing the territorial integrity of the country.
“In this regard, the ambition of our detractors to destabilize the country is being frustrated even as they continue to attack soft targets, carry out hit-and-run attacks on isolated military formations and utilise social media propaganda to disseminate fake news.
“I therefore challenge you as newly commissioned officers coming on board at this digital era, to brace up for these new tactics of our common enemies.”
According to the president, in the past four years, NAF has reactivated grounded aircraft, inducted new fleet and could still meet up “sufficiently with the administrative and welfare needs of its personnel.”
He said: “You are being commissioned at a time when Nigeria is tackling security challenges of terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, armed banditry, communal clashes, cultism, militancy, herdsmen-farmers clashes and other security challenges across our country.”
Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the presidency, through President Muhammadu Buhari's spokesman, Garba Shehu, said that the federal government had defeated the real Boko Haram.
Shehu said that those still in existence were only remnants of the Boko Haram, fugitive criminals, and West African terrorists who were bonding together.
The presidential spokesman said that the federal government was able to achieve this by collaborating with the military and Nigeria-led Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) who are dedicated in fighting insurgency in the country.
