- The former Liberian president described it as a great democratic precedence

- Jonathan handed over power to Buhari following the 2015 general elections

Amos Sawyer who served as interim president of Liberia from 1990 to 1994 has applauded Goodluck Jonathan for peacefully handing over power to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former Nigerian president handed over power to Buhari following his defeat at the 2015 presidential election and even called to congratulate him before the final announcement.

The Cable reports that the former Liberian president said this at the constitutional term limits summit organised by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Naimey, Niger Republic.

He said the former Nigerian president has set democratic precedence by handing over power to his successor. He said the former president did not let his ambition becloud his sense of patriotism.

He said: “I want to thank former President Jonathan is a remarkable gentleman, for what he did for Nigeria; he did not do a second term; he showed example. He handed over powerful peacefully.

“He said his presidency is not worth the blood of a single Nigerian in the fray, I thank you very much in this respect.”

President Youssouf Muhammadu on his part promised to hand over power of Niger Republic’s 2021 election.

He said: “My desire is to pass on power to a democratically elected president peacefully. This will be my legacy.”

Legit.ng had reported that Nigeria's former military ruler, Abdulsalam Abubakar, suggested that ex-president Jonathan has not been given enough credit for conceding defeat after the 2015 presidential election.

Abubakar made the statement in an interview with Nigeria Now newspaper in commemoration of Nigeria’s 20th year of democracy.

His words: “People keep harping on the role of our peace committee in convincing President Goodluck Jonathan to concede defeat to Buhari.

“Nigerians have not given adequate credit to President Johnathan because he took the decision out of his own volition to concede and congratulate Buhari in 2015.”
