Here are some of the external features of the device
On 12th June 2019, after months of speculation on what the Google Pixel 4 XL design would be like, Google took to their official Twitter account where they gave their followers a sneak peek into what the mobile would look like. They, however, just showed the back and not the front of it.
The devices also have a different coloured power button, which is a signature feature on Pixel devices
To drum up hype for the 15th Oct release date event, Google placed a huge billboard in Times Square. Thanks to the billboard, fans were aware that one of the colours that the handset would have would be orange. This is a new colour for any company to release their phone in. The colours are named; Oh So Orange, Clearly White and Just Black. The orange and white seem to have a matte finish while the black has a glossy finish.
The front of the Pixel shall have two cameras, one being the face unlock camera while the other will be a normal camera. It also has a light/motion sensor, audio port, and a Soli radar chip - which enables securing of the face unlock, a feature that is similar to Apple's Face ID. It will also have a face unlock camera flood illuminator and dot projector. The back of the phone will have the usual G logo but will also have a rather large camera bump.
It has an OLED display. The screen size is expected to measure somewhere between 6.23- 6.3 inches. The screen has a resolution of 1440 x 3040 pixels and 534 ppi pixel density. It has an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a screen-to-body ratio of 81.72%.
The display comes with an adjustable option of 60Hz and 90Hz, depending on what is on the screen. The phone's user can manually choose which display they would prefer. It should be noted that while the 90Hz offers a smoother display and smoother scrolling experience, it is quite battery draining. This means that it is advisable to keep it at 60Hz most of the time. At the bottom, it shall have a USB Type C-port as well as speaker cut-outs.
Processor, storage and overall performance of the handset
While most people are more interested in the colours of their smartphones as well as the camera quality, any tech lover will tell you that the most important feature in a phone is the processor. Processors determine how fast your phone is in terms of fast internet connection, how fast your handset responds to commands as well as the types of apps that your mobile device can handle. Have you ever installed a game on your phone and notice that it is suddenly slower and 'hangs' more? This is an indication that your phone's processor cannot handle the game installed.
The smartphone from the giant company comes with the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC. While this is not a bad processor per se, some were hoping that the Google Pixel 4XL would have the Snapdragon 855+ SoC, seeing as this is the newest processor in the market.
In addition to this, the premium handset has a RAM of 6GB. Storage-wise, the device has 128GB of internal memory.
Google Pixel 4 XL battery life
Everyone wants a longer battery life. It makes no sense to have an incredible phone, only to have it die out on you after a couple of hours. The new Pixel 4XL has a 3,700mAh battery. This is about 10% more than users got with the Pixel 3XL. Fast charging has also been rumoured to be part of the deal with these handsets. While nothing about wireless charging has been mentioned yet, it is a feature present on last year's 3 and 3XL phones and thus, it is expected to continue.
Speaker and call quality
While there isn't much information about the Google Pixel 4XL speakers and call quality, last year's Pixel 3 and 3XL had terrible call quality and users could not stop complaining.
There might be some hope as the company showed that the handsets will come with a new voice recorder app. This app is said to be able to transcribe audio recordings and make them searchable. It will also enable users to find words, music, and even sounds like laughter within the audio recordings. It is also said that the application will be able to recognize the sounds of animals and birds. If the app is expected to do all this, then the speakers ought to be quite powerful.
So how impressive/effective is the software?
Operating system and features
An incredible feature in the Pixel 4XL is the Soli motion sense. The sensor carries similar technology to that used in airplanes. With the use of Soli, you will be able to perform quick actions like skipping songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls using your hand gestures. In a blog post by Google, the company boasted about the fact that you do not need to hold your phone for these minor tasks.
According to them, the facial recognition feature working with Soli features will recognize gestures and detect when you are nearby. This differentiates it from all other facial recognition-enabled smartphones out there. That is quite a nifty trick if you ask us. They even included a short video showing how this works. Sadly, Soli shall only be available in 38 countries.
Camera, video, and image quality
When it comes to the Google Pixel 4 XL camera specs, it seems that Google is trying to compete with Apple on this front. As earlier mentioned, the phone has a camera bump at the back. this is because the rear of the device has two camera lenses. The first lens features a Sony IMX363 12.2MP sensor with f/1.7 aperture, while the other is a telephoto lens housing a Sony IMX481 16MP sensor. The telephoto lens offers better zooming features and depth with the camera is in portrait mode.
The image quality has greatly improved in the fact that handsets will also have Motion mode for action shots as well as enhanced night shooting mode due to the Night Sight feature. This feature is sure to be able to take incredible shots of the stars and the Milky Way. Astrophotography offers incredibly clear pictures and will be perfect for your selfies, group photos, and the obligatory 'foodie snap' for Instagram.
Pixel 4 XL also offers 'dual-camera exposure controls'. With these, the user can take images in bright sunlight and still be able to capture the perfect image without having anything washed out.
At the moment, assumptions are that the Google Pixel 4XL price will be about $899 - $949. This relates to the fact that other phone companies have not priced their newly released handsets too high and Google will want their devices to sell too
So far, the reviews have been quite mixed about the new Pixel phones. The most exciting thing about the phone seems to be the camera quality, which is a great improvement from last year, and the Soli motion sense.
Some, on the other hand, are disappointed by the lack of the newest OS in the devices. Others too are holding off from making a verdict until they get a hold of the handsets and see if the battery life and memory issues will crop up.
Verdict on the Google Pixel 4XL
Overall, the phone seems like a great phone. Despite not being 5G enabled and with no SD card slot, the company has made great strides in features such as a bigger RAM, incredible face ID-like system with Soli and motion sense. The camera is also arguably the best that has been seen so far. The devices do seem like a solid investment for any Android lover.
Hopefully, this information on Google Pixel 4 XL makes your decision on getting the phone much easier.
