- Onumah was arrested by men of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport
- The activist who is also a journalist had just arrived from Europe when he was whisked away
A Nigerian activist, Chido Onumah, who was arrested on Sunday, September 29, said he was told that his arrest was because he wore a shirt with the inscription: ‘We Are All Biafrans.’
Onumah was whisked away by men of the Department of State Security (DSS) upon his arrival from Europe at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while waiting for his luggage.
He was released about five hours later with the DSS still silent on why he was detained.
Onumah told Premium Times: “I was arrested for wearing the T-shirt because the SSS said it is capable of causing disaffection in the country.
”They said some people had issues and had contacted them whether I was a part of a group that was planning against the country.”
We Are All Biafrans, is the title of a book Onumah, who is also a journalist, wrote about Nigeria.
The book, a collection of essays by the activist, focused on the need to restructure Nigeria in order to be able to build a united country.
Meanwhile, the DSS has said that it has not received any valid court order for the bail of Omoyele Sowore.
Dr. Peter Afunanya who is the spokesperson of the DSS said this on Thursday, September 26.
There has been concern about why Sowore was still in detention in spite of the report that he has met his bail condition.
Afunanya described the DSS as a law-abiding agency that has regard for the law of the country.
