- APC in Akwa-Ibom state has reacted to the tribunal judgement which upheld PDP governor's victory in the state
- The party said it has confidence in the judiciary and has, therefore, “taken the ruling with equanimity”
- Ini Okopido, the party's chairman, however, added that every available judicial process will be explored to reclaim the mandate and urged supporters to remain faithful
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom state has appealed to its supporters in the state not to give up hope on the party but to remain faithful and steadfast.
The party stated this following its defeat at the governorship election petition tribunal, on Thursday, September 19, Premium Times reports.
The three-member tribunal in Uyo had upheld the victory of Governor Udom Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ruling that the petition filed by the APC governorship candidate, Nsima Ekere, lacked merit.
However, in a statement released after the judgement, the state chairman of APC, Ini Okopido, urged supporters of the party to remain steadfast, adding that every available judicial process will be explored to reclaim the mandate.
He said: “I implore our teeming supporters not to give up hope on the party but to remain faithful and steadfast trusting that we shall deploy every available judicial process to attain our quest to entrench good governance in our beloved state of Akwa Ibom."
Okopido said the APC has confidence in the judiciary and has, therefore, “taken the ruling with equanimity”.
He said the party has asked its lawyers to evaluate the judgment and advise it on the next step to take.
In its reaction, the PDP described the tribunal judgment as “divine”.
“Today, the tribunal of men properly constituted by the laws of our land has confirmed the divinely orchestrated, politically engineered and electorally delivered mandate of Deacon Udom Emmanuel as the governor of Akwa Ibom state,” the PDP chairman in Akwa Ibom, Paul Ekpo, said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the judgement in a petition filed by the governorship candidate of PDP in Kano state, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, against Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, had been reserved by the governorship election petition tribunal sitting in the state.
Kabir-Yusuf and his party are challenging the declaration of Governor Ganduje as the winner of March 9, governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The chairman of the tribunal, Justice Halima Shamaki, after listening to the parties in the matter on Wednesday, September 18, said that the judgment date would be communicated to them.
