Chelsea star Mason Mount limped off the pitch just after 16 minutes in his side's 1-0 defeat to Valencia in their Champions League opening group game at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old Briton was helped off the pitch by the Blues medical team after being hacked down by former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin.

Although, it initially looked like the midfielder had shaken off the injury, he was however unable to continue the match moments later.

After the match, his manager, Frank Lampard confirmed the injury but insisted they will wait for the doctors report before knowing how long he will be out for.

Mount has been massive for the Europa League champions this campaign scoring three goals in five appearances and has become one of the key members of Lampard's team.

"We have to assess it over the next 24-48 hours to see the scale of the injury," said Lampard.

"We don't know how bad it is. It is an ankle injury and it is a shame. He's been playing so well and he started well tonight."

The England international was promoted to the Blues senior team in 2017 but was immediately sent on loan to Vitesse and Derby County before finally making his debut under Lampard last month.

While playing for the Championship side that almost got promoted to the Premier League last season, Mason scored 11 goals in 44 matches for the Rams under his present manager.

He recently penned a new five year deal which will see him represent the west London club until the summer of 2024.

The Blues, who played in front of their home fans tried replicating their impressive victory over Wolves but it seems Mason Mount's injury earlier in the game disrupted their plans.
