Gbajabiamila task aides to live up to the mandate of the 9th Assembly

- The speaker of the House of Representatives said said it gives him great confidence that he assembled a great team that is transformational

- Gbajabiamila however, said that all the aides and assistants of the House cannot afford to fail the ninth National Assembly

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has called on his aides to live up to the mandate of the ninth Assembly.

Gbajabiamila while speaking at a two-day retreat organized for the aides of the Speaker, Federal House of Representatives in Abuja on Friday, September 13, although he has been impressed by their contribution, he believes there is room for more.

The retreat themed, "That we may succeed in our collective mandate" was put together by the speaker's office in conjunction with Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn (PERL ).

In his opening remarks, the speaker said it gives him great confidence that he assembled a great team that is transformational.

He also urged the aides to use the opportunity to learn from each other and all the various leadership of the National Assembly.

"Exchange ideas that would guide your interactions as we work together. It is the House of Representatives that meets the highest expectations of all its citizens."

"I want you as always to remember what our vision is. This is our mandate and we must live it to the best because there's no alternative," Gbajabiamila said.

Stating that the ability of every political leader to convert campaign promises into actions and expectations to achievements depends largely on the aides, the advisers and the assistants, Gbajabiamila said his success as the speaker ninth House of Representatives depends on the new aides.

"Do the work that you have been assigned and do so diligently with integrity never leaving room for friends and foes alike to question your commitment."

"We are colleagues, nobody here is the boss. Everyone here was carefully selected. You're the face of the country because every office is important. However, your manner, rudeness or smile tells a lot about the office of the speaker," he added.

Also the national leader for Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn (PERL ), Adiya Ode, said the essence of this partnership is in recognition of the speaker as been critical to the process of governance in Nigeria.

Ode said: "The speaker has selected a team with a lot of experience and he has task them seriously and it is expected that the team would help him deliver on those commitments."

Speaking earlier, Nnana Igbokwe said the rational behind the retreat was to build capacity for the aides of the speaker so that they can function effectively.

He also said the essence of this retreat is to build capacity for the appointees under the speaker's office.

Igbokwe said: "It is also for us to buy into the vision of Mr. Speaker. First, primarily he is first amongst equals however he is there to provide leadership for the lawmakers for the ninth assembly. We are there to help him galvanize ideas and contributions of his colleagues that would help better the lives of all Nigerians".

One of the beneficiaries of the program, Seun Odofin, who is the special adviser to the speaker on administration said the major takeaways was speaker's humility, confidence and experience.

"Is the confidence that you are working with an experienced and confident man that has the vision, plan for the legislature and the country."

"I'm confident that after the four years of his tenure we the staff would be persuaded that we have worked with an experienced man. For me, my personal goal would be to ensure staff discipline," Odofin said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Gbajabiamila had warned that the National Assembly complex was collapsing.

The speaker of the House also urged the Federal Capital Administration (FCTA) to take over the duty of maintaining the building which he said is in a "sorry state".
