- The tribunal dismissed the petition put forward by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP
- According to Justice Mohammed Garba, the military certificate Buhari possesses is highest than the minimum requirement
The presidential election petition tribunal has ruled that Muhammadu Buhari has the qualification to run for presidency.
Atiku Abubakar who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party had filed a petition arguing that Buhari was not academically qualified to contest in the 2019 election.
Justice Mohammed Garba who headed the five-man tribunal in his ruling on Wednesday, September 11, stated that the army said the president has the certificate required to contest in the election.
The tribunal said there was no evidence that Buhari lied in his form about his academic qualification.
Garba said: “Mr Buhari is not only qualified but is eminently qualified."
The tribunal said that the certificate issued to Buhari by the army is higher than the secondary school certificate which is the minimum requirement for presidential election.
Meanwhile, President Buhari on Wednesday, September 11, presided over the Federal Executive Council meeting (FEC), amidst the tribunal ruling on the February 23 presidential election.
The development was made public in a series of tweets posted by the special assistant to president on digital and new media, Tolu Ogunlesi. He also attached a video showing the president presiding over the meeting.
The presidential aide disclosed that Buhari announced, during the meeting, that the Ministry of Finance and Budget and National Planning had been merged.
He also announced that a Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs had been created to institutionalize the various interventions of the government which support some of the nation’s poorest and most distressed citizens.
The president also asked the secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, to draft a schedule of ministerial responsibilities for his review and approval.
