Xenophobia: My countrymen believe Nigerians are harming our young people - SA foreign minister

- South Africa’s foreign affairs minister, Naledi Pandor, says many Nigerians in the country are involved in drug and human trafficking

- Pandor said South Africans believe their youths are being harmed by Nigerians

- The minister called for assistance in ensuring that those involved in trafficking and other abusive practices do not come to her country

The South African minister of foreign affairs, Naledi Pandor, has stated that many Nigerians in the country are involved in drug and human trafficking.

Naledi reportedly stated this in an interview with eNCA, a South African media house, on Thursday, September 5, The Cable reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Pandor made the comment in response to criticism that enough was not been done by security agencies to protect foreigners in the wave of the xenophobic attacks witnessed in the country.

Pandor said South Africans believe many Nigerians are “harming our young people.”

When asked if foreign nationals, including Nigerians, have been protected by the country’s security agencies, she reportedly said: “I would appreciate them in helping us as well to address the belief our people have and the reality that there are many persons from Nigeria dealing in drugs in our country.

“I believe that Nigerian nationals are involved in human trafficking and other abusive practices.

“This kind of assistance of ensuring that such persons do not come to our country will be of great assistance to our nation.”

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that Naledi Pandor, South Africa’s foreign minister, revealed that xenophobic attacks against foreigners in the country are caused by prejudice.

Pandor described the hatred for other African nationals as afrophobia.

She said: “There is an afrophobia we are sensing that exists, there is resentment and we need to address that.

“There is a targeting of Africans from other parts of Africa, we can’t deny that. But, there is also criminality... because a lot of this is accompanied by theft.”
