Teni, Blaqbonez, among top 5 musicians featured by foreign media as changing music rules in Nigeria

Lagos is not only the economic hub of Nigeria, it is also the creative centre of many artistes experimenting with new tunes, and forms of music.

One of the genres of music that has come out of the former capital of Nigeria is Afrobeats which has Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido and a host of others leading that space.

From the same city, there is a new wave of emerging artiste blending hip-hop with Afrobeats to produce new tunes in ways that their music unique.

Here are five emerging talents coming out of the bustling city as listed by New York Times:

1. Blaqbonez

Akumefule Chukwu-Emeka who is popularly known as Blaqbonez, an Imo indigene, is promising hip-hop artiste that has recently been rocking the Nigerian music scene. Like most emerging musicians in the country, Blaqbonez honed his lyrical skill on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where he was a student.

The rapper under the ChocolateCity label, has become of the country’s artistes to look out for as he has sometimes called himself the best rapper in Africa.

2. Odunsi (The Engine)

His real name is Bowofoluwa Olusfisayo Odunsi , aged 23,and was reported to have dropped out of a Ghanaian university in 2015 due to his challenge with ADHD.

Odunsi’s music is a commix of funk beats and afrobeats drawn from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Little wonder his first album titled Rare could not be easily categorized. He is one of the country’s artiste leading the nation’s alternate music industry.

3. Wavy the Creator

Born as Jennifer Ejoke, she started professional music in 2017 in Lagos. What is interesting to note is that, she is was relatively popular as a designer, photographer, and videographer who has worked with popular acts like Olamide.

Ejoke is aged 26 and is presently working on EP which reports have may drop towards the tail-end of the year.

4. Fireboy DML

Like Blaqbonez, Fireboy DML (with the real name Adedamola Adefolahan) perfected his skill on OAU campus where he sang alone at nights training his voice while others are reading deep into the night.

He hit the Nigerian industry with a successful single, Jealous, a song that explores the complications of love and jealousy.

The musician, according to the New York Times, said Jon Bellion, Passenger, Wande Coal are some of his influences.

5. Teni the Entertainer

She is not called the entertainer for nothing, if there is ever anyone that does well with humour and music, then Teniola Apata, 26, popular known as Teni, is the person.

She became successful with her song Askamaya which instantly became a club banger and a favourite track on Nigerian playlists. She is born in Lagos.

Teni also draws from oldies from 1970’s and 1980’s for inspiration, especially from beats and music legends like Wasiu Ayinde, King Sunny Ade, and Ebenezer Obe.
